In October 2022 Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla electric car company purchased the controlling interest in Twitter. Purchase of Twitter was with help from the member of Saudi Arabia royal family Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and by Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund. Various civil society organizations have expressed concerns that these social media brands do not do enough to curb hate messages and baseless news and views. Newly verified accounts include far-right activists who push Islamophobic messaging, among other hateful ideologies such as Amy Mekelburg, known online as Amy Mek and dubbed a “major cog in the Islamophobia machine", who has for years pushed anti-Islamic rhetoric - including comics ridiculing Muslims and personal attacks against community leaders - in her Twitter feed.
